Every September, our design studio gets the same call from parks, malls and city event organizers: "We want something spooky, but family-friendly." Halloween has become the second-busiest season in our workshop after Chinese New Year, and the pumpkin-and-pirate themed displays we ship in August and September are some of the most fun projects of the year. Here is what we have learned building them.
Start with one hero figure, not ten small ones
The displays that stop visitors share one trait: a single oversized character that anchors the whole scene. Our pumpkin pirate captain (above) is 5.8 meters tall, big enough to be photographed from across a plaza, detailed enough to reward a close look. When clients ask for "lots of Halloween elements," we push back gently. One hero figure, three or four supporting characters and clear walking space will outperform a crowded layout every time.
Get the glow right before the paint goes on
A jack-o'-lantern face lives or dies on light. We test LED placement on the steel frame before any fabric is glued: warm 2700K strips for the pumpkin body, cooler 4000K accents for the eyes and mouth. Because the PVC fabric is translucent, a badly placed strip shows as a hot spot from 20 meters away. Our wiring team mocks up the full lighting scheme at night inside the workshop, you cannot judge a Halloween lantern at noon.
Build for the weather, not the photo shoot
Outdoor Halloween displays face rain, wind and sometimes early snow. We apply the same weatherproofing standard to seasonal collections as to permanent installations: outdoor-grade silicone sealing, IP65-rated LED modules and a welded steel skeleton rated for winds up to 80 km/h. Every figure also spends 48 hours powered on in our workshop before packing, long enough to catch a loose connector or a seam that weeps in morning dew.
Give visitors a reason to take out their phones
The most shared photo from last year's collection was not a giant figure at all, it was a 3-meter "Aliens Love Pumpkins" sign that visitors could stand next to (below). A display people can pose with earns thousands of organic social posts, and that is marketing no banner can buy. We now include at least one photo-spot prop in every Halloween proposal we send.
What a custom Halloween build takes
From approved 3D render to crated shipment, a mid-size Halloween collection of five to eight figures takes six to eight weeks in our 5,000 m2 workshop in Zigong, the city where most of the world's festival lanterns are made. Rush timelines are possible, but sculpting is where quality is won, so it should never be compressed. The pieces above sit in the same holiday and seasonal display range we build for Christmas and winter programmes, so a Halloween scene can be re-themed for the next season rather than retired. Planning a display for next season? Tour our factory or talk to our team early, a free 3D render of your concept is included in every quotation.
