When a client approves a lantern design, the real work is just beginning. Inside our 5,000 m2 workshop in Zigong, the city widely regarded as China's lantern capital, every custom piece passes through the same six stages before it lights up an opening night. This is the process we run every day for theme parks, zoos and festivals in more than 20 countries, and knowing it will help you plan yours.
Step 1: From brief to 3D render
We start with your theme, site photos and budget. Our designers turn the brief into concept sketches, then a 3D rendering showing the lantern from the exact angle your visitors will see. Most renders take 3-5 working days, and we revise until you sign off, because once welding starts, changes become expensive.
Step 2: Welding the steel skeleton
Every lantern begins as coils of steel wire and round bar. Craftsmen bend each rib by hand against full-size drawings, then weld them into a skeleton strong enough for transport, wind and months outdoors. A 10-metre figure keeps a welding team busy for about two weeks. For symmetrical shapes we check each rib against string lines before the next stage, a small habit that saves days of rework later.
Step 3: Sculpting faces and muscles
Where a lantern needs a face, paws or fur, the flat skeleton receives a second skin of mesh and shaping compound. Sculptors carve expression into eyes and claws here. Visitors to our workshop are always most surprised by this stage: it is where a steel frame starts to look alive.
Step 4: Fabric skinning
Stretchers glue high-density silk and velvet over the shaped body, section by section, matching the colour swatches from your approved render. Layering thin fabric over fabric creates gradient effects that paint alone cannot achieve.
Step 5: Painting and hand detailing
Airbrush artists add shading, stripes and weathering. On a pirate lantern this is where rust appears on armour and a glow appears in the eyes. Every painter on our floor has at least five years of festival-lantern experience, because hand-painted detail is what separates a professional lantern from a decoration.
Step 6: LED wiring and a 48-hour burn-in
We wire low-voltage LED strips into each section, driven by controllers that dim, chase and change colour. Outdoor pieces are sealed against rain. Then every lantern burns in for 48 hours before packing, if a section fails, we fix it on our floor, not at your venue. Our factory is ISO 9001 certified, and this test is part of that routine.
Packing, shipping and installation
Finished lanterns are trial-assembled, photographed, then crated for sea freight. Our logistics team ships DDP to most destinations, and for festivals we send engineers to supervise unloading, assembly and final wiring on site, up to the moment the switch is thrown on opening night.
