Custom animal lanterns for a zoo lantern festival, showing the African savannah scene at night

Custom Zoo Lantern Festivals & Night Trails

Turn your zoo, wildlife park or safari park into an immersive nighttime destination with a custom lantern festival designed around your venue, your animals and your visitor experience.

01After dark

Transform your zoo after dark

Spark Lantern designs and manufactures large-scale illuminated animal displays, themed environments and complete lantern trails for zoos and visitor attractions worldwide.

From the first concept to fabrication, engineering, international delivery and on-site installation, every project is developed around your site and your event requirements. That means the trail follows the paths you already have, the animals reflect the collection you already keep, and the build answers the weather your venue actually sees in winter.

A zoo lantern festival is not a shipped-in funfair. It is a piece of your venue, made to fit it.

02The case for a night trail

Why lantern festivals work for zoos

A zoo lantern festival creates a new reason for visitors to experience your venue after dark.

Rather than simply placing illuminated decorations throughout the grounds, we design each project as a connected nighttime journey. Animal lanterns, immersive environments, illuminated tunnels, interactive elements and themed scenes are arranged along the visitor route so the evening has a shape rather than a scatter of lit objects.

A custom night trail can help zoos:

  • —Extend the visitor experience into evening hours
  • —Create seasonal programming during quieter periods
  • —Introduce new nighttime experiences for families and groups
  • —Transform existing pathways without permanently changing the venue
  • —Build new storytelling around wildlife, conservation and nature
  • —Create highly visual moments for photography and social sharing

Every project is designed according to the venue rather than adapted from a fixed package.

03Made for your collection

Custom animal lanterns designed for your zoo

From realistic wildlife to imaginative environments, Spark Lantern can develop a complete visual language around your zoo. Our custom lantern designs can include:

African wildlife, big cats, elephants and giraffes
Marine animals and underwater worlds
Birds, butterflies and insects
Dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures
Endangered species and conservation themes
Forests, flowers and botanical environments
Chinese dragons and cultural themes
Illuminated arches, tunnels and entrance installations

Existing designs can be adapted to suit your project, or our design team can develop original lanterns specifically for your venue. Where a zoo keeps a species the public rarely sees in daylight, a lantern version can put that animal at eye level on the trail, lit and close enough to photograph. For a zoo after a headline attraction, one route we have taken is a life-size dinosaur trail installed along an existing path, documented in our Dinosaur Night Safari case study.

Three roles a trail has to cover are worth separating. A Siberian Tiger figure stands on the path and has to hold attention from a distance before it rewards a closer look, while a Panda Family group is built at 1.5× scale so visitors can stand beside the figures and take the photograph themselves. A third role is the threshold, the piece the trail passes under rather than past, which is what the Reef Shark Encounter arch is built for: visitors move through the arch as part of the routed trail, giving the installation a clear threshold role rather than another object viewed from the side.

04Rhythm and routing

From a pathway to an immersive night trail

A successful zoo lantern festival is more than a collection of individual displays. The experience should have rhythm. Visitors need moments of discovery, large visual landmarks, quieter transitions, photo opportunities and a clear progression from entrance to finale.

That is why we plan lantern installations around your existing visitor route. The sequence below is the working shape of most trails we build, adjusted to the site:

Entrance landmark → Themed zones → Animal scenes → Light tunnels → Interactive areas → Hero installation → Finale

Our team can work from site plans, photographs, dimensions and venue information to develop a concept that fits your available space and visitor flow. We also flag the practical consequences early: where a path is too narrow for a crowd plus a queue for a photo moment, where a hero piece needs a sightline to work, where a service route has to stay clear for keepers.

05Engineering

Built for outdoor events

For professional zoo and attraction projects, appearance is only one part of the design. Lantern installations also need to perform reliably in outdoor environments, through a full season of rain, wind and frost.

Spark Lantern considers structural design, electrical systems, outdoor conditions, installation requirements and maintenance access during project development. Depending on project requirements, engineering considerations can include:

Structural steel framework
Outdoor-rated lighting and electrical components
Weather-resistant materials
Wind-load considerations
Flame-retardant fabrics
Low-voltage LED systems
Waterproof electrical connections
Modular construction for transportation and installation

Technical specifications are developed according to the individual installation and destination requirements, rather than issued as a single fixed sheet. A coastal wildlife park and an inland city zoo do not face the same loads, and the drawings should say so.

07Scoped to your site

A lantern festival built around your venue

No two zoos are identical. A compact urban zoo may need a concentrated experience built around several major installations. A large wildlife park may require a longer trail divided into multiple themed zones, with rest points and dwelling areas along the way.

That is why Spark Lantern does not offer a fixed zoo lantern festival package. Each proposal is developed according to factors such as:

Venue size
Visitor route
Number and scale of installations
Theme and creative complexity
Engineering requirements
Destination
Event schedule
Shipping and installation scope

After reviewing your project information, our team prepares a proposal based on the actual requirements of your event.

From daytime zoo to nighttime destination

A regional zoo in Northern Europe turned its quietest season into its strongest, without building a single permanent structure.

Challenge

A winter calendar that went quiet

By the time the clocks changed, footfall at this Northern European zoo had dropped below a third of its summer figure, and the grounds closed early. The brief was blunt: create an evening reason to visit through the coldest months, without pouring concrete or committing to a permanent building. Daytime operations could not be disturbed for a single day during the build.

Solution

Animal scenes along a routed path

Twenty-four large-scale animal scenes were set along a 1.2 km walking route, each species drawn from the collection the zoo already keeps. The tallest piece, a giraffe lantern, reached 6 m. Galvanised Q235 steel frames carry UV-stable fire-retardant silk, lit on 24 V low-voltage LED with RCD-protected distribution, and every base plate was ground-anchored to an 8 Beaufort wind rating. Four technicians assembled and commissioned the route in 18 days.

Outcome

A fixture the zoo re-booked

Evening attendance finished 40% ahead of forecast with visitors staying an average of 3.5 hours, and the zoo commissioned a second season before the first had closed. Guest photography became an important source of organic awareness throughout the season.

09Beyond one season

Designed for more than one season

A well-planned lantern collection can also become a longer-term event asset.

Depending on the design and project strategy, installations may be dismantled, stored, relocated, reconfigured or combined with new pieces for future events. Modular construction is what makes that practical: a scene that breaks down into road-freightable sections can be re-sited in a different part of the grounds next year, or paired with new figures to refresh the trail without starting again.

For venues considering recurring nighttime programming, our team can discuss modular construction and future reuse during the design stage. It is far cheaper to decide this on the drawing than on the loading dock.

The species-by-species craft behind scenes like these is covered in our guide to building animal lanterns from wildlife reference, which follows a figure from reference photography through frame, sculpting and skinning to a zoo-ready finish.
