A regional zoo in Northern Europe was facing a familiar problem: winter attendance had dropped to less than 30% of its summer peak. The team needed a night attraction that would draw families after dark, without the capital cost of a permanent building. The solution was a 1.2 km lantern night trail — and it changed the zoo's winter economics in a single season.

The Challenge: An Off-Season Problem

Like many zoos in temperate climates, the park saw its visitor numbers collapse between November and February. The animals were less active in the cold, daylight hours were short, and families had little reason to visit after school or work. The zoo's commercial team had explored several options — indoor play areas, temporary exhibitions, light projections — but each required either permanent infrastructure or a budget that the off-season revenue couldn't justify.

We needed something that would make people want to come to the zoo in winter, at night, and stay for three hours. We didn't think that was possible without building something.— Festival Producer, Regional Zoo

The Brief: No Fixed Infrastructure, Maximum Impact

The zoo's brief was precise: a temporary night attraction that could be installed in under three weeks, operated for six weeks, and removed without a trace. It needed to be weather-proof, crowd-safe, and visually spectacular enough to generate organic social media coverage. And it needed to work within the zoo's existing path network without blocking daytime operations.

The zoo's team had seen lantern festivals in other cities and was curious whether the format could work at a zoo scale. They contacted Spark Lantern with a simple question: could we build a trail of animal lanterns that matched our collection?

The Solution: A Walkable Animal Lantern Trail

Over the following weeks, our design team produced concept art for 24 animal lantern scenes, each matched to a species in the zoo's living collection. The trail was mapped along the zoo's existing 1.2 km perimeter path, with scenes positioned at natural dwell points — widening, junctions, and viewing areas.

Each scene was engineered for the zoo's specific conditions:

  • Galvanised steel frames rated to 8 Beaufort wind load, with ground-anchored base plates that could be removed without damaging pathways
  • Fire-retardant silk fabrics in species-accurate colours, layered for translucency and depth
  • 24V low-voltage LED systems with IP65 weatherproofing, distributed across six junction boxes with RCD protection
  • Smooth-form edges and cool-surface lighting for safe close-up crowd interaction
  • A 6-metre entrance arch that served as the trail's photo landmark and entry threshold

The Installation: 18 Days, Start to Switch-On

Three 40ft containers arrived at the zoo in late October. A four-person installation team completed assembly, wiring and testing in 18 days — working daytime hours alongside the zoo's normal operations. The trail opened on schedule in mid-November.

The installation was the smoothest part of the project. The team arrived, knew exactly what they were doing, and were gone before we knew it. The trail was ready on the date they promised.— Festival Producer, Regional Zoo

The Outcome: Numbers That Spoke for Themselves

Over six weeks of operation, the trail delivered results that exceeded every forecast the zoo had set:

+40%
Night Attendance
3.5h
Avg. Dwell Time
4.4/5
Visitor Rating
+20%
F&B Revenue

Night attendance was 40% above the zoo's forecast. Average dwell time reached 3.5 hours — longer than the zoo's summer average. Food and beverage revenue on event nights rose 20% year-over-year. And visitor photos from the trail became the zoo's most-shared social media content of the entire year.

The trail was renewed for a second season, with three new scenes added based on visitor feedback. The zoo is now planning to make it an annual winter fixture.

Key Takeaways for Venue Operators

  • A lantern trail can transform an off-season without permanent infrastructure
  • Matching lantern species to the venue's collection creates a unique, on-brand experience
  • The photo-shareability of large-scale lanterns is a self-sustaining marketing engine
  • Installation can be completed in under three weeks alongside normal operations
  • The format is repeatable and upgradeable — scenes can be added or refreshed each season
